The Maze helmet probably saved my life.
By AJ
I'm six weeks off of a pretty gnarly injury where I crashed in the terrain park - cracked rib, vertebral compression fractures, and a concussion.

The last thing I remember before crashing was the ground coming up at me. Next thing I know, I'm being strapped to a backboard by ski patrol.

I definitely had a concussion...but the Smith Maze dispersed the impact in such a way that I had ZERO headaches, ZERO ill effects, ZERO head-related issues coming out of the hospital. Yes, the helmet cracked, but in a big enough impact a helmet is designed to spread the impact of the force in such a way as to protect your noggin from being affected by the force / trauma (just like how cars are designed to crumple in a specific way in order to protect passengers). So yeah - crash hard enough, and any helmet will crack.

I probably won't buy a different helmet for as long as I continue to ride, because I know this works. I was between size L and XL, but I chose the more snug fit and am glad - if the helmet was loose, who knows if I would have had the same impact protection.

Smith Maze. Legit.

Saved my son's noggin
By Christina Nuccio
Actually, this is the second Maze helmet I've purchased. My son had a pretty bad snowboarding accident in the first one, and was knocked unconscious (briefly). They had to take him down the mountain on a ski patrol sled, then in an ambulance to the hospital. So yes, although he did suffer a concussion (hard not to when you land on your head), his head was well protected, and he recovered in a few days.

Also, in case you didn't know....when you do have a fall in your helmet, you're suppose to replace it (if the shell is working properly, it'll absorb the impact...which can cause unseen cracks and compromise the integrity of the shock aborption in the future). What I didn't know was that Smith Optics provides a 3 year crash warranty. I contacted Amazon, explained what had happened, and they refunded my money (less, a restocking fee) and even provided a postage-paid mailing label for me to return it.

I am eternally grateful that my son was wearing this helmet when he crashed, and pleasantly pleased to be able to trade it in for a replacement (without too much extra cost).

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!

so light, and comfy!
By Nathan
Overall this is a great helmet for the price. I wanted something under $100 that was comfortable, clean, and lightweight from a respected manufacturer. This fit the bill perfectly.

I agree with what others say about the goggle hook; I don't trust it to keep my goggles from coming out of the hook if I take a spill. Also, the flaps to open/close the vents can bunch up if you don't make sure they are flat before putting the helmet on. The only other criticism I can make is that the inside could use maybe a touch more padding, as I have a slight ridge on my head and the helmet can feel a bit firm in that one spot.

Other than that, it's light, not bulky, overall really comfy, and it fit practically perfect right out of the box (I had to tighten the chin strap a little).
