don't leave home (for cold outdoor activities) without it
By Tim Rapp
I first got one of these Maxit Headgators around 1992! Last year I ordered two more, one for myself, another for my girlfriend. It's cheap, simple, versatile, lasts forever, and works well. My original one is still in great shape, despite being used about 300 times and going through the washer/dryer about 50 times. How many items do you own from the early 90's that still work extremely well? I use it for skiing (always), cycling (below 50 F), and hiking on cold windy days. I ski about 40 days/year in the Rocky mountains, I've tried many other neck warmers but none work as well.
windproof neck warmers -- seems like a good idea, but unless you're climbing mountains in Alaska these are overkill. Feel stiff and make it hard to breath.
fleece neckwarmers -- feel great in the store, but in the real world they freeze solid and make your face colder.
Maxit - blocks just the right amount of wind. If the front gets covered with snow/ice, just rotate it halfway around and you now have a nice soft warm part against your face. Fits under ski and bike helmets, even if they are tight. It's thin enough that when it's over my mouth and nose I can still breath normally.

Best kept secret in clothing
By austin_Larry
Maxit makes tremendous quality products. Long before under armour they supplied the NFL with all of their cold weather gear. Not sure if they still do. In any case I now live in Austin but when I was doing graduate work on the East Coast this was by far my most useful and essential piece of winter wear.
It is a tube of polypropelene material that Maxit uses for almost all of their products with some lycra thrown in I believe. You can wear it as a neck warmer but it is stretchy enough to then pull up over your head for a complete head warmer. It is so stretchy that it can also be pulled up under your chin for a balaclava. You can also wear it as a thick headband.
I was at an REI and I saw a similar product with 'rabbit fur'. That one was way bulkier and less stretchy. Maxit's material is highly breathable yet also blocks wind right away. PERFECT for winter activties as you heat up and sweat the sweat is going to be wisked away. If you live in a part of the country that has a winter buy this. If you are an outdoor athelete in a wintery part of the country buy this right now. You will thank me. It is one of my favorite products of all time.

An Essential Piece of Cold Weather Gear
By Gregg Silk
Soft, stretchy, warm, medium weight fabric.
Keeps the neck, throat, ears, and lower face warm. Combine with any style hat or hooded jacket to give full coverage from winter chill. Much better than a scarf, stays in place. Good addition to cashmere dress jackets that don't have good collars. Makes the day feel 10 degrees warmer. Keep it in your jacket pocket for when things suddenly turn chilly, when it will be as welcome as a mug of hot chocolate.
