Affordable, effective and a bonus
By L. Campbell
The north wind was kicking in pretty fiercely to go with the snow. I couldn't really pop down to the local outdoor store without freezing, so I used the power of Amazon Prime to get this overnighted to me. It's a fine, polar fleece-style balaclava -- warm, lightweight, and more breathable than wool (you don't get as much condensation forming/freezing inside from your breath). It's kind of on the large side -- it still works fine for me, but it will accommodate just about any big fat head, I would think. As for the heatmax pockets over the ears, well, that's just a bonus as far as I'm concerned. You get two included with the balaclava, but they are one-time use only, and they aren't super cheap. Still if you're going to be outdoors all day (hunting, construction, etc.), I can see how they might become a habit.

Base Layer Under Motorcycle Helmet
By M. Lofaso
When I saw this I had a good feeling that it would help kill the chill of winter riding. How can you go wrong with HotHands next to each ear? Well it hasn't gotten cold enough to put it to a real test, but upper 40s were completely tolerable. In the 50's and low 60's it's downright comfortable.

Because it's fleece and not some cotton blend it tends to stay warm when the moisture from breathing or sweating would start to normally make my cotton bank-robber balaclava from years past more of a hindrance than anything. Wind from riding tends to evaporate moisture rather than cotton which holds it like a wet sponge next to my face.

I only give it 4 stars because it could be a little bit longer. Even with a fleece zip-up base layer for my torso I couldn't tuck the balaclava into the turtle neck without wind leakage. For this an extra cheapo neck cover was needed to keep the chill out. Some online store had a motorcycle specific version of a balaclava that was extra-long.

I recommend this product and definitely get a box of warmers. They last for hours and fit nicely in most helmets where there's usually a void for our ears. Additionally the warmers don't fit snug enough to block sound, but do help to baffle the buffeting at high speeds. Not earplugs, but I find earplugs to block the sound a little too well to be safe when I get back on city roads and slow down a bit.

WARM WARM WARM!!!
By R. Hawkins
This is extremely warm!! Lasted outside on winter windy snowy day, thank goodness I had this. I didn't even use the handwarmers in the ears I'm sure that adds even more warmth.
